Alysa's Journey

How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for 6 years

What made you decide to go natural?
One thing for sure it wasn’t for the health of my hair. Because my hair was healthy, thick, and long while it was relaxed. But, I decided to go natural because I always wanted to cut and have natural hair ever since I was in middle school.

What did you do to transition to Natural?
I kept having it blown out and cornrows

Why did you opt out of the Big Chop?
I wanted to have some kind of hair when I decided to cut my relaxed hair off, and I was only in the 10th grade when I went natural. So I wasn’t bold enough to get it all chopped off, even though I did only have a 1 ½ inch of new growth when I had my relaxed hair cut off. The first time
And my sister did the Big Chop a few years before and my mother told me to never do what my sister did at the time.. So I didn’
The second time I had some really messed up dreading action going on and I cut it off with 1 inch of hair left and that was three years ago.

What did and do your friends and family think about you going natural?
My Dad told me my hair would never grow back.. 0_o
My mom was 50/50 she didn’t like it and at the same time she did.
My friends and peers teased me; to remind you I was in high school
But now everyone is supportive.. Now most of my family and friends are natural,
so it’s like I started a movement.

Did it matter to you?
No, I had my mind set on this for many years. I just waited till my mother said it was ok..

Have you ever had self esteem issues?
No I haven’t had self esteem issues when it comes to my hair. But body I have had them when I was in college.

A lot of women battle with needing to be light-skinned with long hair....have you ever had that issue?
No, I was raised to accept and love the way that God made me, and I preach the same thing to the young ladies I know.  During my relaxed days I did feel like I was popular and liked because I had long relaxed hair, and that was one of the reasons I went natural. I wanted people to like me for me.

Do you have any challenges in your professional environment with your natural hair?
I am blessed that I don’t have any challenges at my job. But I do believe that I wasn’t hired for many jobs because I was natural.

What have men said to you about your hair?
Oh my! Ever since I was in the 10th grade I have been getting some very beautiful comments from men of all races. Some races more than others; But I don’t want to get into that…
Ex.“My sista I am so proud of you for being young and bold enough to go natural, I applaud you for that” Then he would kiss my hand… (Blush)

What's your favorite thing about being natural?
I love the freedom. It’s cheaper than getting a perm every six to eight weeks. I don’t have to sit in a salon for 4 to 6 hours. I know everything that is going in my hair because I am huge on natural organic products. It is healthier, very versatile when it comes to styling, and I just LOVE IT!

Least Favorite thing?
WASHING! I have the patience for everything else but washing I can’t stand. It is challenging to get my scalp all the way clean so it does take extra time..

What products have you been trying out on your hair?
Recently I’ve been using
Terressentials Organic “Lemon” Hair Wash
Giovanni “ Smooth as Silk” Organic Conditioner
Leave In Conditioner Mix w/ Giovanni conditioner, Argan Oil, Water
My Shea Butter Mix w/ Argan Oil, Vitamin E Oil, EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)
 Water mixed with EVOO
A Month ago I was using Garnier Fructic Triple Nutrition Shampoo and Conditioner
But I decided to go all natural and all organic.

What's your Fave?
Terressentials Hair Wash, It is so good to the point I don’t have to condition my hair if I don’t want to. That is the only shampoo so far that I can say that about. With all the other shampoos I have used I have to condition my hair to get the moisture back.

Least Fave?
Organix Shampoo, it stripped my hair really badly.

What's your hair type?
Too many…lol But I can say that my whole head would be 4a- 4c and beyond
There might be some 5 up in here…lol

How often do you deep condition your hair? What do you use?
Every week, that’s only if I don’t have a style in.
I use Giovanni Conditioner, EVOO, a shower cap, my body heat and the sun.

What is your weekly regimine?
Ok, you might want to sit down for this,
After six years I have recently perfected my regimine. I start with sectioning my hair off in 8 jumbo twists clipped up; 4 in the back 4 in the front. Then I get a spray bottle full of warm water and in each section I saturate my hair with the water, finger detangle and add my hair wash by rubbing (not scratching) it on my scalp then adding it to my hair. During all of this I am keeping my sections twisted and clipped up. Then I hop in the shower wash it out, add my conditioner (if in the mood), then rinse that out 5 minutes later. Hop out the shower, pat dry my sectioned hair with an old t-shirt; making sure it’s not all the way dry. Then working in sections I spray my hair with my leave in conditioner mix and sealing it with my Shea Butter Mix, while putting my hair in more twists. Then I do the Green House Effect for the whole week even if I style my hair after I wash it.
Green House Effect:
Lightly spray my hair with water
Lightly spray my hair with leave in conditioner mix
Rub Shea butter in (optional)
Put a shower cap on then satin scarf or bonnet

What would you say to someone considering going natural or one struggling with their natural hair?.
Do your research. It’s not going to be easy all the time. Know that you are beautiful no matter how your hair turn out to be. Not one woman has the same hair type. Have patience, and as your hair grows, pay attention to your hair so that you will be able to figure out a regimine that is just for you. Don’t let the negative comments get to you; Because there will be some. Drink a lot of water if you don’t do anything else healthy for your body (your hair loves it). Be happy of what you have because this is the way God made you.

  2. Lysa, I think you were very brave to go natural at such an early age. It is very important that you are not bound by the world's standards, but you are freed by the renewing of your mind. Your beauty seems to shine from the inside out. You go Lady Naturale! God bless
