Joi - Her Natural Journey

Hello to my transitioning chicas!  My name is Joi Sherrod and I have been transitioning for almost 8 months now and on June 20, 2011 I plan to be completely natural!  I always loved curly hair and big hair (I tried to mimic this with my roller sets…lol) but I didn’t realize that I actually had naturally curly hair!!!!    Let me start out by saying I used to LOVE RELAXERS!  When all my friends around me were going natural and making suggestions I would always state natural was not for me because I had no clue on how to style my hair (and even at one point I felt it was just another trend, until I read about the damage chemicals have on the scalp!).  I was a weekly girl and was dedicated to the cause getting my hair done spending anywhere from $125.00 to $150.00 per month!

So one day as I was working out and my relaxed hair was completely limp from sweat I decided why am I spending all this money and it is going down the drain after every workout?  So I decided to extend my relaxers to every six months, however, in month 3 the joke was on me because when I felt my new growth curls I fell in love!   I immediately went to a natural salon and she cut off 3 to 4 inches of my hair.  I was in shock afterwards but then I realized if I was going to do this then I needed to do it the right way and that was to get some of this processed hair off my head!

I am very much so a “product junkie” trying out a TON of new products, but here lately I have been sticking to my favorites.   As my hair continues to grow, I plan to do Bantu Knots and use Curlformers.  I would also like a Heutiful Steamer (Hint Hint Keenya the steamer would be a great giveaway…lol!).

I will say that I am very shocked at my accomplishments throughout this whole process.  As I stated above I was very much so a weekly hair girl and it was very difficult for me to figure out what to do with my hair after making this decision.  But after relentless hours of looking at YouTube videos and finding a regimen that works for my hair type I feel that I am close to conquering this!
I wanted to share my story with you all to let you know that it is possible to have a successful transition.  You just have to continue to listen to what your hair wants and not be scared to try out new things!  Also, do not let any negativity get in your way!  I had so many people ask me why did I want to do this and your hair was so “pretty” straight.  I also had some very supportive friends and total strangers that journeyed before me to show that this can be done (Thank you…you know who you are!).  But I had to realize that I am on this journey for myself and there is nobody in the bathroom with me as I had to fight my relaxed hair each morning to look a “certain” way.  All I am trying to say is don’t let individual opinions tell you what is the right/wrong way to style your hair!  At that end of the day all that matters is what is best for you.  Be encouraged!  God Bless!

Here is my current hair regimen:
Pre-Poo: Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. I sit under the dryer for 15 minutes.

Shampoo: Kinky Curly Come Clean

Conditioner: Herbal Essences Hello Hydration

Leave-In Conditioner: Kimmaytube Leave-In

Twist-Out Products: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Kinky Curly Curling Custard

Sealant: Castor Oil
