Let me start by saying I am happily and joyfully married to an awesome man and we have two wonderful sons.
Natural to me basically mean chemical free.  People become natural for a plethora of reasons.  I became natural because I got tired of the chemicals in my life.  All of chemicals in my hair, my skin and my food were literally making me sick.  After a relaxer I would have migraines and acne.  Some facial products literally burned my skin red or off.  After I became pregnant with my first child I started really watching what I was eating.  That lead to researching what was in the foods I was feeding my unborn child.  Needless to say the growth hormones was enough to make me want to become a vegetarian immediately.  Then I noticed the pesticides and other harsh chemicals that were put on the fruits and vegetables.  That left me with starches like pasta, rice and bread.  Then I realized that even those were badly processed with bleach and preservatives and many chemicals I can’t begin to name.  That was my first step toward my natural journey.  I started eating hormone free meats, locally grown chemical free fruits and veggies and most of my starches I make or purchase with limited processing.
I stopped using commercial lotions and many shampoos because of the chemicals in them.  For example, Propylene glycol, in just about everything we purchase, is antifreeze.  The same thing you put in your car to keep it from over heating I was putting in my hair and in my skin. Additionally, propylene glycol can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.   Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS & over 150 other similar names) can be found in soaps, shampoos, detergents and toothpastes.  It’s also used as a degreaser for car engines, which is the way it’s used in these products.  This chemical is extra bad because it causes health problems from PMS to Menopausal symptoms to dropping male fertility and increasing cancers such as breast cancer.  I just pointed out two of the dangerous chemicals found in majority of our skin care products.  Don’t take my word for it, do your own research when you’re ready.
Concerning my hair, it wasn’t a big deal for me because I didn’t get a relaxer until later in life and I often did a cathartic chop every 5-7 years anyway.  My last chop was different because by the time I did that I was already on my “natural” kick.  Knowing the dangers of lye and the shampoos and hair grease targeted at African American made it so much easier.  For the most part my hair and skin care regiment include olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, baking soda, tea tree oil, peppermint oil and glycerin in the winter months.
If I were to list every harmful chemical in the various products this could very well be a 200 page message.  If I were to get into what they are and what they do, well, that would be another few hundred pages.

A great exfoliate that I use for my body has 2 ingredients:
 Ingredients:
1 tablespoon Olive Oil
2 tablespoons Dark Brown Sugar

Instructions:
Mix ingredients in a bowl. Apply to skin in a circular motion for a minute or 2. Rinse with a warm cloth and water. The cleanser will feel greasy but after you rinse and pat dry, skin with be super silky soft! Also great to remove eye makeup!!

The toner I mix up has 2 ingredients as well:
Ingredients:
4oz Witch Hazel
20 drops Carrot seed essential oil

Instructions:
Mix ingredients well in bottle. Shake before each Use. Apply to face with cotton ball after cleansing. Used primarily for its healing properties and effects on the skin, Carrot seed essential oil stimulates circulation, repairs and tones the skin, increases elasticity, reduces the formation of wrinkles, and scars

  1. I have been using Witch Hazel as a toner. Now, I'll try adding the carrot seed oil. I have oily skin so I wonder if it will make it worse, we'll see. Thanks for the info.

  2. Carrot seed essential oil is mainly an anti-aging oil. It stimulates circulation, repairs and tones the skin, increases elasticity, reduces the formation of wrinkles, and scars. For oily skin I suggest 15 drops Lavender essential oil along with the witch hazel.
